Hearing the classic songs on this disc, all of them original
studio tracks from Williams' too-brief heyday, it can
actually seem amazing that he lasted as long as he did. The
man sounds as if he's about to implode from overwhelming
sadness at nearly every turn. Just listen to the pained
yodeling of "Lovesick Blues" or the defeated sighs of "Cold,
Cold Heart" — this music's ghostly allure remains
immediate, a direct shot to the soul.
